Come Home to Vermont, stay awhile, you'll like it here.

Smack dab in the middle of Vermont
you"ll find the Mad River Valley nestled deep in the Green Mountains.

Tucked alongside the Mad River in the midst of the valley lies the charming village of Waitsfield, dotted with classic New England village homes and farms.

Through the covered bridge and 1/4 mile up the street brings you to our guest cottage.

Set atop Mill Hill in the picturesque Historic District of Waitsfield Village, the cottage is a short walk to the Mad River and the oldest covered bridge in use in Vermont. The river is at the center of the valley, offering canoeing, kayaking, fly fishing and swimming. Also within walking distance are our village library, boutiques, craft and art galleries, country stores, gift shops and restaurants.

Sugarbush and Mad River Glen Resorts, just minutes drive, provide some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the East. Sugarbush Golf Club offers an 18-Hole Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Masterpiece. This valley is laden with trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking and mountain biking, from expert backcountry terrain to quiet gentle country paths.

Then again if doing nothing is your idea of a real holiday, welcome home!

We purchased the Cottage in 1998, the home of Charles and Edna Canerdy. It had been vacant for many years and we were anxious to bring it back to life. With a lot of soap, water, elbow grease and a little paint she is ready for company. Just outside the door is our favorite place to sit and welcome the day.

The kitchen, bright and roomy is supplied with prep and serving ware for cooking up your favorite culinary fare. As you can see in the photos we kept the vintage Hardwick gas range, can't imagine anything else in its place. We are fortunate here in the valley to have access to a great variety of fresh and wholesome foods. Our local Farmer's Market runs May through October on Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Here you can find fresh produce, flowers, honey, eggs, meat, cheese and other farm products, in addition to Vermont made crafts, baked goods, and prepared food.

As we slowly restore the cottage our intent is maintaining its character and charm.
It is kept very clean and in working order.

There are 4 bedrooms, Q,Q,Q,2S, 1 bath with shower on the first floor and a half bath upstairs. The Cottage will sleep 8 quite comfortably. Should you need to work while away or just keep track of email, the house has wireless internet. There is a washer and dryer, cable TV, DVD, stereo w/ipod hookup, large assortment of books and a few puzzles and games.

The first floor bedroom has a queen bed. I believe this room was originally the front parlor. I'm guessing by the large medallion molding surrounding the ceiling light.

The beds are ready made and topped with quilts and comforters to keep you snug.

Our oldest daughter Erin was our tenant the first year we acquired the cottage, breaking us in as newbie landlords. First thing she did was paint her bedroom floor blue, very blue (my husband was aghast, I love it). This bedroom is on the second floor, has a queen bed and gets the beautiful morning sunrise.

This is probably my favorite bedroom. I love the way the light filters through the leaves of the big maple out front. This room has a queen bed and is on the second floor.

Here is a room with two twin beds, also on the second floor. We have yet to remove the vintage wallpaper and skim coat the plaster. Guess we are just savoring a little bit of the past.

"We’ll never be Vermonters, of course, any more than a chicken can be a goose. But just to end our days here, surrounded by Vermonters: conservative, yet a little wacky; serious, but with humor dry as a cork leg; and dedicated to perfect woodpiles, is more than anyone could deserve."
